Setting & significance
Swamimalai, near Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district, is traditionally the fourth abode. The shrine is reached by a flight of steps, and Murugan is worshipped here as Swaminathaswamy.
Sacred tradition
According to temple tradition, it was at this place that Murugan expounded the meaning of the Pranava, “Om,” to Lord Shiva himself, and so came to be honoured as guru to his own father. The Lord of all is remembered as listening, attentively, to the child.
